July 1861 – Al followed the Nineteenth Indiana Infantry Regiment to the Washington, D.C., area, became ill, and returned to Indianapolis.
March 1862 – Al ran away, changed his name, and joined the regimental band of the Sixtieth Indiana Infantry Volunteers.
August 19, 1862 – Seventy-fifth Indiana Infantry Volunteer Regiment was mustered into service.
August 21, 1862 – Seventy-fifth Indiana moved to Louisville, Kentucky.
September 1, 1862 – Almon was mustered into service in the Seventy-fifth Indiana Infantry as Albert Walton.

June 13, 1863 – Tullahoma campaign began. Seventy-fifth Indiana left Murfreesboro.

June 24 – 26, 1863 – Seventy-fifth skirmished at Hoover’s Gap, Tennessee, pushing back Confederates.
June 30, 1863 – Confederate General Bragg evacuated Tullahoma, Tennessee, retreating to Chattanooga.
July 1 – 4, 1863 – Army of the Cumberland occupied Tullahoma.
July 3 – 5, 1863 – Federal victories at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and Vicksburg, Mississippi.
August 21, 1863 – Federal army shelled Chattanooga while Seventy-fifth marched to Chickamauga.
